We had a wonderful time at Pedernales Falls State Park in Johnson City, Texas but our volunteer job is over. We have friends, Carolyn and Roger from Missouri, volunteering at Fort McKavett. We planned to help out with their West Texas Heritage Days, March 23-24. With spring break upon us there was no space available in local state parks so we decided to ask about volunteering for the entire month. We were accepted and I am loving it.
Fort McKavett is a spiritual place. There are so many original buildings on the grounds. It is now funded by the Texas Historical Commission. Our campsite it across the road from the entrance to the fort and we can look our our windows and see the buildings. I can imagine what it would have been like for those traveling in the area and seeing the fort for the first time.
I am working with Carolyn, helping to clean the buildings on site. We clean the buildings that are set up as displays to show what they might have looked like when it was an active fort. We are able to touch the walls and sweep the original floors. We dust historical items on display. It is so moving and a privilege to be allowed to be a part of this.
Denny is helping Roger redo all the picnic tables on the grounds by replacing the tabletops and seats.
