Traveling with Dad

Saturday the 13th, Denny went to the rodeo with Dad and Juanita in Arcadia, FL while I stayed home and got things put away for our travel days to Myrtle Beach.  They had a great time and I got things ready.  They came home and Denny took me out to dinner.  Ruby Tuesday's is one of our favorites restaurants and I splurged with some lobster carbonara.  Mmmmm, but oh so high in calories.  Can't do that very often.

Sunday, we got up around 6:30 and took showers and got ready to leave the Gulf Coast RV Park.  Denny left to get Dad and we hit the road about 8:30.  I love the later morning travel days.  We drove to Yulee, FL and stayed in the Good Sam Park right off the interstate.  They gave us a break on the night's fee and we saved $10.  The sites are all pull thru concrete pads.  They are close together and with our slides we would have been right on top of our neighbors if we had any.  The park was almost full and there were a lot of permanent campers there.

We got up this morning to travel to Savanna GA.  We thought since we were so close we could spend the afternoon there.  We are staying in Fort McAllister SP.  Nice pull thru spaces with trees.  We were able to get satellite tv and I have internet so we like this park.  There are two shower houses and some sites are on the water.  There is a gate at the entrance that needs a code so seems secure.  These are similar to the sites we had in Alabama. 

It was a long way from the visitor center to the fort and Dad didn't think he could make the walk.  As we left the building there was a golf cart sitting under the canopy.  Denny asked the desk clerk if we could take Dad to the fort in the cart.  They gave the keys to Denny and we were able to take Dad all the way to the fort.

This is the first earthen fort we had ever been in.  The confederates found that the thick earthen walls were too much for the union soldiers and cannons.  Every night they rebuilt the fort with the help of nearby plantation slaves.  The fort stayed in tact until Sherman came at them from the land side.

There is a civil war fort on the park grounds.  It is all earthen bunkers and there were several "bomb proofs" as they were called to store goods and act as dorms for the men.  All of these were under the earthen bunkers.

We left the fort and headed to Savanna.  Following road signs to the visitor center at the city center.  Denny left Dad and I off at the door and went to park the truck and we got tickets for a trolley tour of the city.  The city was built around 24 squares.  Dad was impressed that all the squares are parks.  What a beautiful city it is and what a colorful history.  This is a place I would like to return to.  Most of the fountains had been dyed green for St. Patrick's Day.  They celebrate for several days in Charleston.  How fun.

Many buildings are heavily decorated with ironwork.

These are the oldest buildings in Savanna.  They were once frequented by pirates and used to kidnap men by the British Navy to man their ships.

Time to head back to the rig for the drive to Myrtle Beach and Carrollwoods RV Campground/Grapefull Sisters Vineyard.  Thought I'd better show you our rv site at the park.
