I was watching Dave Leno one night and saw the end of a performance by Broadway's “million dollar quartet.” I learned a play had been written about the meeting of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis at Sun Studios. Well, anyone who knows Denny knows that he is a huge fan of Johnny Cash and the play is in Chicago. I had to get tickets.
I looked online and found seats but decided to ask Denny first thing the next morning if he wanted to go. Silly question, of course he wanted to go. The timing was perfect for his birthday and today was the day we had tickets. We were ready for some fun after fighting the AC in the rig for the past two weeks and it isn’t solved yet.
We got up early, Jason lent us his car as we didn’t know what parking would be like near the Apollo Theatre in Chicago with our truck. It is sure a good thing we drove his car. We never would have found parking for that monster.
A couple of days ago the theatre called and said parking would be at a premium as there was a street festival planned for that day in front of the theatre and much of the parking used for the theatre would be used for the festival. Thank you to the theatre for taking that extra step. It really helped.
We arrived early and after driving around the neighborhood a few times found the lot behind the theatre. We asked the attendant about parking and were told to come back in an hour. We did and were able to get parking very near the theatre.
It was time to get out of the car have lunch and enjoy the festival before the play started. We thought there may be street vendors with food we wanted to eat. We didn’t see anything so opted for the cafe at the end of the block.
We sat near the window and an outdoor stage with entertainers. It was like they were in the room with us. It was loud but not nearly as loud at it was outdoors. Denny had a wonderful hamburger and I had a terrific BLT. After satisfying our hunger we continued to explore the festival and found four other stages with different types of music on each one. What fun but it was time to get back to the theatre.
We had great seats. The theatre is small and intimate. Our seats were second row, center stage. The play was WONDERFUL. We so enjoyed it. Most of the audience were people of our age with a few younger people scattered among us.
The actors were terrific musicians and really had their characters down. We were wishing we could stay for the next performance but that wasn’t possible so Denny bought a shirt and we headed home.
What a great day. I headed to our neighbors for the night (she has generously lent me her extra bedroom while our AC is being fixed) and Denny stayed at the rig.
Hopefully our AC will be repaired tomorrow and our adventures can begin again.
