No AC

Denny and our son went to an RV dealer this morning to pick up a new water pump.  Ours has been making peculiar noises lately and finally decided to give up.  Denny found a split in the casing.

They left early hoping to get back quickly to avoid the heat of the day.  Of course they had a 84 mile round trip so getting back quickly was relative.

A short while after they left I recognized that the rig was getting warmer and that the AC had not kicked on.  The indoor thermometer read 85 degrees and the AC was set at 77.  Oh no, not good.

I called Denny to let him know and ask while he was at the dealer if they may have an idea what went wrong.

Our youngest son works in apartment maintenance and knows a heating and cooling guy willing to come look at our AC tomorrow.

I spent the night at our son’s home.  Denny braved the heat and stayed at home.

The next morning came and the consensus was that the thermostat quit working.  We called several dealers asking if they had one.  No one did so we ordered one from Colman’s in Springfield and prepared to wait through the weekend before the part would arrive.

While at my son’s I found a mobile repairman.  Kevin’s Mobile RV Service.  Denny called him and he said he would come when the thermostat arrived to install it.

The new thermostat arrived in Springfield on Monday.  Denny went to pick it up and Kevin came Tuesday to install it.

Alas, it was the wrong thermostat.  We were sent the 120 volt instead of the 12 volt unit.

We called the dealer we ordered it from and they agreed to refund our money.  Denny ordered the new part through the manufacturer of our Excel, Peterson Industries.  The part was to be shipped directly to us.

Kevin showed Denny how to install the thermostat  when it arrived and we felt we were on the road to recovery.  Well…… the new thermostat didn’t do the trick.  We had to call Kevin again.

He is so busy but knew we were waiting to get the AC working so we could leave for Colorado to help my aunt.  We changed our reservation again and waited for Kevin’s new diagnosis.

He came the next afternoon, looked things over and found the sending unit/wiring harness was bad.  At this point he said we had to have had a power surge to cause these problems.

Denny thought about that and thinks that there could have been a power surge after we returned from dumping our tanks at the local state park.  He plugged the rig in without turning off the breaker as he usually does.  Our 50 amp post at the house is not placed high enough to allow us to use our surge protector either so….  Another lesson learned.

Kevin said he was so busy that he wouldn’t be able to return for over a week.  He again showed Denny how to replace the damaged part.

The part was ordered and sent overnight.  It arrived on Thursday over two weeks after the AC challenge began.  Denny and our son changed the part.  Voila!!!  We have AC.  Denny is my hero, again.

Well the last two weeks haven’t been all bad.  Our family and friends stepped in to help us during this time.  I was able to sleep at a neighbors and enjoy her company for a week.  We spent more time with our kids to keep cool.

Our journey isn’t always smooth.  Sometimes things are a bit rocky but the adventure never end.
